Abstract

Prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is a key aspect of surgical recovery and has implications for the institution caring for the patient. Patients in distress from PONV suffer increased recovery times, require additional medication and staff attention, and have poor satisfaction and experiences. In recent decades, more information has emerged highlighting the critical role of PONV prevention as a part of each patient’s care plan in preparation for surgery. This chapter will outline practical points around risk stratification, multimodal prophylaxis, pharmacology, treatment considerations, and pharmacogenomics. Prevention of PONV requires a multimodal approach and may still occur in some patients despite delivery of recommended care. The concepts reviewed in this chapter provide the framework for optimization of PONV prevention and treatment.
