Abstract

Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) (or chronic myeloproliferative disorders) are a group of hematologic disorders distinguished by clonal expansion of abnormal hematopoietic stem cells leading to a hypercellular marrow with excessive terminal proliferation of the hematopoietic cells and peripheral blood granulocytosis, erythrocytosis, and/or thrombocytosis. This hyperproliferative process, in certain conditions, is associated with bone marrow fibrosis and extramedullary hematopoiesis. The extramedullary hematopoiesis along with excess sequestration of the hematopoietic cells in the spleen often leads to massive splenomegaly, one of the clinical hallmarks of MPN. Hepatomegaly, though less frequent, may also be present.
