Abstract

Critical assessments of graphene science to improve its benefits to the society is discussed here. We identify that large-scale production process is the most important aspect of graphene technology to be recognized and solved. A sustainable, scalable, high quality, inexpensive method to produce graphene is vital for use in electronics and composite materials industries. Additionally, it is critical to assess the quality of graphene produced by high-throughput methods. Finally, the life cycle assessment of graphene that accounts for work place hazards, cytotoxicity, genotoxicity and long-term impact on the environment is to be established. Safety concerns about using this material in real life has to be balanced with its fabulous properties prior to its widespread use. In the concluding remarks, we discuss the socioeconomic impact of graphene in education, market investments and job creation. Graphene stimulated numerous new theories in fundamental science, which are already finding their right place in textbooks. Careful investigations and standardized protocols in the field as well as responsible utility of graphene and its composite materials are necessary for critical applications of graphene in the broader service of our society.
