Abstract

This chapter discusses the fundamentals carburetion. It outlines the history of the development of carburetion systems and explains the basic requirements of a carburetion system. Along with this, the requirements for metering and mixing are also described. The chapter then explains the process of carburetion, which comprises of three stages—metering the fuel through jets in proportion of the air flowing into the engine, breaking up the liquid into fine droplets to assist evaporation, and distributing the evaporating liquid uniformly into the air flow to form a homogeneous mixture. The chapter then discusses the two main categories of carburetors: fixed choke type carburetor and variable choke type carburetor. The fuel: air ratio compensation for both the types is discussed. In addition, the chapter takes a look at the fundamentals of acceleration, discussing the requirements, provision, and the mechanisms of accelerations.
