Abstract
This new chapter begins with a discussion of the nature of artificial intelligence and its classification. Artificial intelligence is compared with natural intelligence and its general application areas are given. The chapter then reviews the principles of expert systems, which are known as classical AI technique. Expert system structure with knowledge base, inference engine, user interface, and explanation subsystem is explained. Hierarchical frame base structure with rule matrix is discussed. Expert system shell with interface elements is reviewed. Example applications of expert systems, such as P–I tuning, selection of commercial drive products, automated design and simulation of an AC drive system, and control of smart grids based on OPAL-RT-based real-time simulators, are discussed.
