Abstract

Synthetic conventional polymers are mostly utilized for packaging materials due to easy processability, low price, and low density. But synthetic polymers cause environmental pollution due to their nondegrading behavior. Hence, biodegradable polymers are ideal replacements for these synthetic polymers in packaging applications. The decomposable behavior of biodegradable polymers is a boon for packaging materials and is why they have been efficiently used in packaging. Nowadays, there are many varieties of natural and synthetic biodegradable polymers, which are used in packaging applications. Various biodegradable polymers such as cellulose, polylactic acid, poly(vinyl alcohol), starch, etc. are used in edible and nonedible packaging applications because of their easy decomposition and recyclable nature.
