Abstract

Nanofibers are novel materials with very specific properties that confer them a high potential to be employed directly as scaffolds in tissue engineering or as fillers for composites. In this chapter, an up-to-date state of the art of the production techniques of glass fibers and nanofibers is presented. The interest in this one-dimensional material in tissue engineering due to its advantageous structure and feasible compositions is discussed and the latest achievements in their utilization as scaffolds for cellular growth are reviewed. Special emphasis is given to the novel laser spinning technique which can quickly produce a large quantity of glass nanofibers with bioactive compositions without any postprocessing step. Also, their good capacities as biomaterials are described.
