Abstract

Skin and mammary glands undergo considerable morphologic changes over the first 4 weeks of life. Hair follicles arise from the basal layer of epithelium, and develop into anagen-type hair follicles, with many attaining maximal length by PND 7. After PND 7, the hair follicles cycle from actively growing to resting in waves. There are predominantly catagen follicles at PND 21 and PND 28, and a second anagen phase is apparent at PND 35. Rudimentary arrector pili muscles are visible by PND 7, and sebocytes are recognizable at birth. At PND 0 a few mammary gland ducts/ductules are present, which subsequently branch into terminal end buds (TEB) and then alveolar structures by PND 28. At PND 42, alveoli and alveolar lobules are present in males and females, and sexual dimorphism is apparent.
