Abstract

Understanding and managing insect resistance as it evolves in pest populations are complicated processes. Several major concepts and issues that become key themes for the rest of the book are discussed in this chapter. The history and philosophy of insect resistance management (IRM) are explored. Definitions of insect resistance and resistance management are explained. The roles of integrated pest management (IPM), program coordination and cooperation, and pest behavior in IRM are discussed. Traditional approaches to IRM are described, but the reader is cautioned not to take anything for granted. The best IRM will likely account for unique aspects in pest species, environment, human behavior, social conditions, and economics.
