Abstract

This chapter introduces the Cortex family of processors and in particular the Cortex-M profile. We start with a short history of ARM CPUs and an overview of the Cortex family of processors outlining the A, R, and M profiles. The Cortex-M processor is also compared to the earlier ARM7/9 CPUs that were used in the first ARM-based microcontrollers. The remainder of the chapter introduces the key architectural features of the Cortex-M family. We will also look at the different variants of the Cortex-M processor and examine the differences between the Cortex-M4, M3, M0, and M0+.
