Abstract

This chapter focuses on programming PICs in the PicBasic language. The PicBasic compiler (PBC) is designed to work with the popular 14-bit core devices. The PicBasic Pro compiler (PBPro) works with the 14-bit core, 16-bit core, and the new 18CXXX components, which do not have the page limiting memory all the other PICs have. The chapter provides a basic overview of the Microchip microcontroller devices. Later, the book presents the details of some of the inner workings of the 14-bit core components, provides an understanding of how to properly write programs to control a PIC, and discusses assembly language from time to time because that is the programming language Microchip developed for PICs. The PicBasic language is easy to learn and somewhat intuitive. The examples and explanations presented in this book should leave the reader ready to program any concept they have in mind. PBPro and PBC share the same basic code structure, but the PBPro version offers many added features and is designed to be independent of the Parallax module coding limitations.
