Abstract

Biochemistry continues to change. Research into the human genome is being complemented by investigations of the transcriptome, the proteome, and the metabolome. Expansion of knowledge about cellular signaling systems has provided new insights into the pathogenesis of cancer and has enabled new therapies for a range of diseases. When we look at metabolism, in addition to the strings of chemical reactions, we now consider networks of signaling cascades that control these reactions. We also understand better the links between metabolism and nutrition- and lifestyle-dependent diseases, such as obesity, diabetes, atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease, and age-related neurodegenerative diseases.
