Abstract

This chapter illustrates different water treatment technologies. Water treatment technologies can be organized into three general areas: physical methods, chemical methods, and energy intensive methods. The objectives of the chapter are to provide an overview of water treatment and purification roles and technologies, and to introduce terminology that would assist people in understanding the relation of the various technologies to the overall schemes employed in water treatment applications. The chapter also discusses various acts and regulations regarding waste-water treatment and cleaning water—such as the Clean Water Act (CWA). The chapter also discusses the different causes of water pollution and all the harmful effects of polluted water. It also describes waste water treatment. Treatment of a water supply is a safety factor, not a corrective measure. The chapter also elaborates on the various ways of purifying water, and the points that should be considered regarding water disinfectants during the treatment.
