Abstract
The development of pain medicine started with John Bonica’s recognition of the multidisciplinary nature of pain medicine. Bonica’s seminal volume, The Management of Pain, founding of the International Association for the Study of Pain, and Melzack and Wall’s conceptualization of gate control theory of pain initiated a cascade of events that resulted in the launching of the discipline of pain medicine. The International Association for the Study of Pain, World Institute of Pain, the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, American Academy of Pain Medicine, American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians, Spine Intervention Society, and the International Headache Society have been and continue to be pivotal in the evolution of the field of pain medicine and research. Clinical journals devoted to pain medicine are thriving. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education has validated the training of pain fellows and the discipline is now credentialed by the American Board of Medical Specialties. These developments support the robustness of interest of the discipline and serve to substantiate the growing importance of pain medicine internationally.
