Abstract

Genetic studies have identified the molecular basis for many disorders of skeletal muscle membrane excitability, which results from mutations of specific ion channels. This article reviews the clinical manifestations of disorders of skeletal muscle membrane excitability resulting from these ion channelopathies. The phenotype and genotype of skeletal muscle channelopathies are best correlated in the nondystrophic myotonia and periodic paralyses.
