Abstract

A study was made on the effect of gibberellic acid on amylase, cellulase, β-fructofuranosidase, pectinesterase, and starch phosphorylase activities in elongating dwarf-pea internodes. Hormonal stimulation of amylase and β-fructofuranosidase activities correlated closely with internode growth, the activity of starch phosphorylase less so, and gibberellic acid had no immediate effect on cellulase and pectinesterase activities. Injection of glucose (or glucose derivatives) into pea internodes mimicked the effect of gibberellic acid on fresh- and dry-weight accumulation, cell elongation, cell division, and cell-wall synthesis. It is proposed that the over-all effect of gibberellic acid on enzyme development is to provide more substrate (particularly glucose) for general cell metabolism and wall synthesis within elongating internodes.
