Abstract

A systematic study based on density functional theory is carried out to investigate the formation of atomic gold chain structures on patterned hydrogen‐terminated Si(001):21 surfaces. The formation of the chain structures is shown to depend on the surface pattern and the gold coverage. Some of the chain structures are semi‐metallic in nature and thus may be used as interconnects in circuit devices.
