Abstract

Superoxide-related parasitic reactions and high overpotentials are two major challenges to limit the practical application of Li-O2 batteries. Herein cerium iodide (CeI3) is used as a bifunctional redox mediator to solve the above two challenges together. CeI3 dissolved in the liquid electrolyte is ionized into Ce3+ and I−. The Ce3+ ions as superoxide radical scavenger capture the superoxide radicals. At the same time, the I− ions act as redox mediator to dissolve the Li2O2 solids on the cathode. As a consequence, the cycle life of the Li-O2 battery with CeI3 showed remarkably improved compared to the battery without CeI3.
