Abstract
The clinical and pathologic features of 17 cases of obviously malignant as well as cellular fibromatous tumors of the ovary were analyzed to establish criteria for a determination of prognosis. The length of follow-up ranged from two months to 13 years, with an average of four years. The tumors fell into two categories, which were distinguishable mainly by their degree of mitotic activity: a usually benign form with one to three mitotic figures per ten high power fields (HPF), designated cellular fibroma, and a malignant form with four or more mitotic figures per ten HPF, designated fibrosarcoma. Additional guidelines to prognosis included the completeness of removal of the tumor and the presence or absence of rupture.
