Abstract
The physics and applications of cavity quantum electrodynamics in semiconductor lasers are discussed. Spontaneous emission from a quantum well was drastically modified by the microcavity structure. The increase in the coupling efficiency of spontaneous emission into a cavity resonant mode leads to the reduction of the threshold current. Oscillation without inversion is possible if the coupling efficiency is increased to close to one.
