Abstract

The title compound, {[Zn(C8H4O5)(C10H8N2)]·H2O}n, was synthesized by reacting Zn(NO3)2, 5-hydroxyisophthalic acid and 2,2′-bipyridine under hydrothermal conditions. Self-assembly between the bridging ligands, chelating ligands and metal ions results in a one-dimensional coordination polymer, in which the ZnII atom is six-coordinate and shows a [ZnN2O4] octahedral geometry. The ribbons are interconnected by an extensive network of hydrogen bonds involving the water molecule, the hydroxyl group and the carboxylate O atoms, forming a two-dimensional layer. These layers are connected through π–π interactions between the pyridyl rings [centroid-to-centroid distance 3.57 (1) A].
