Abstract

In the automotive industry, EDI made its first steps on German (network) soil. The VDA EDI project has the longest tradition and is still the project with a maximum of EDI connections and EDI traffic in Germany. The case highlights how a specific industry structure and a particularly competitive and dynamic environment favoured the fast and thorough diffusion of an -at that time revolutionary- emerging technology. After a description of the industry, I trace the history of the VDA EDI project leading to the situation of diffusion and use in 1994 which is the basis for analysis. The analysis follows the conceptual framework elaborated in Chapter 2 and covers aspects from diffusion of innovations theory, transaction cost theory, and power-dependence theory. A final consolidation places the EDI project in the framework of the political economy for the German automotive industry.
