Abstract

Capillary electrophoresis (CE) is a technique that has been explored for the separation and quantification of a wide variety of analytes. This article discusses the ways in which CE has been used for clinical testing. These applications have included the use of CE for the measurement or analysis of proteins, peptides, amino acids, hemoglobin, enzymes, immunoglobulins, hormones, drugs, DNA, inorganic or organic ions, carbohydrates, and tumor biomarkers. Techniques that have been employed in these measurements have ranged from capillary zone electrophoresis, micellar electrokinetic chromatography, and nonaqueous CE to capillary isoelectric focusing, CE-based enzyme assays, CE immunoassays, and affinity CE.
