Abstract

Blicher’s Diary of a Parish Clerk (1824) is one of the first works of realist fiction in Danish literature. Through a consideration of the story’s origin at the intersection of “popular” and “serious” writing, I propose a reading of Blicher’s relation to the classical Latin canon. Toward the end of my essay I consider how modern canons consist mainly of works critical of the very idea of a common cultural norm.
