Abstract

Proliferation of digital topographic data collected at different levels of governments and private sector necessitated the establishment of national standards so that this terrain data could be exchanged to everyone’s benefit. Under the auspices of the Canada Council on Surveys and Mapping and in cooperation with a wide spectrum of producers and users of digital terrain information, a set of National Standards for the Exchange of Digital Topographic Data was developed. These standards cover the classification (taxonomy) of topographic features, standards for quality evaluation, and Electronic Data Processing (EDP) standards.
