Abstract

Core/shell Au/SiO2/Y2O3:Eu3+ and hollow Y2O3:Eu3+ nanoparticles were synthesized. Compared with the hollow Y2O3:Eu3+ nanoparticles, a maximal 28% red emission enhancement was observed in the Au/SiO2/Y2O3:Eu3+ samples when excited at 310 nm. This enhancement is due to the increase of radiative decay rate by localized plasmons and decrease in the cross relaxation rate among adjacent Eu3+ ions. The decreasing in the cross relaxation rate does not lead to the increase of quenching concentration after attaching to Au nanocores, which is attributed to the balance between the radiative decay rate enhancement and the increase of the surface-related non-radiative decay.
