Abstract

Heats of partial exchange at 25° of nitrate with chloride and thiocyanate ions on hydrous zirconia have been determined calorimetrically as a function of exchanger composition. Standard enthalpy changes, ΔH°, have been calculated for the exchange processes RA + B − ⇌ RB + A − the values have been combined with ΔG° values calculated from the thermodynamic equilibrium constants to give the standard entropy changes, ΔS°. The thermodynamic functions are discussed in terms of the important factors involved in the ion exchange processes.
