Abstract

The aim of this paper is to assess the incorporation of BIM content in construction education for the benefit of productive and competitive construction firms. The study adopted a quantitative approach, where 44 out of 50 questionnaires were returned, representing 88% response rate. The respondents were inclusive of head of departments, lecturers, assistant lecturers, and doctoral candidates in different departments of architecture, construction management and quantity surveying, civil engineering and town and regional planning. Using both percentile and descriptive analysis, results revealed that collaborative learning ensured fast and effective compilation and interpretation of data, better communication, improved teamwork. From the findings it is evident that there was limited incorporation of BIM in the construction education, 45% of the respondents agreed that there was no incorporation of BIM in the current curriculum. The findings further revealed that teaching BIM at a higher level produces competent graduates with enough technological advanced knowledge to participate in the industry, and they stand a better chance of employment than graduates that are not familiar and well-equipped with BIM knowledge. With the collaboration of key stakeholders, the initiative of intensifying the incorporation of BIM in construction education can improve communication and teamwork within the construction firms, and the industry at large. The findings of the study allow institutions of higher learning to improve their programmes on construction education to include BIM content. Additionally, the construction firms must play a more meaningful role towards contributing to programmes of BIM in the construction education. An understanding between the BIM programmes of institutions of higher learning and the use of BIM in the construction industry is also a requirement to produce firms that are more productive and technologically competitive.
