Abstract

The article refers to the period 1986–1989 in the contemporary history of Bessarabia (the Republic of Moldova), then part of the Soviet Empire, and addresses the struggle of the intelligentsia and the majority of the population for the officialization of the Romanian language and its return to the Latin alphabet (forbidden by the Soviet communist power in January 1941). The author highlights four stages of this struggle, bringing for each of them, many new data, related to the events he witnessed and participated in.
