Abstract

On two occasions during the 1930s, Brecht focused his attention on the artistic device of “montage”. He did this while confronting the epic with the dramatic forms of theatre, and during his campaign against Lukac’s conception of realism. This paper scrutinizes the underpinnings of the notion of montage, and reviews its relevance to Brecht’s concept of modern literature and theatre.
