Abstract

The World Health Organization (WHO) and Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI) recommend that infants are exclusively breastfed until six months of age. While there is a high initiation rate for breastfeeding at hospital discharge, the drop-off rate continues to increase. There have been many studies conducted into reasons behind the decreased longevity and exclusivity of breastfeeding and there is evidence from the literature that there needs to be more intervention antenatally to have a positive influence on infant feeding. Innovative thinking is required in how this can be facilitated and one intervention that requires further research is antenatal hand expressing. Antenatal hand expression of colostrum has been researched in pregnant diabetic women but there is a lack of evidence for non-diabetic pregnant women and the potential role it may have in influencing longevity and exclusivity of breastfeeding.
