Abstract

The electrical breakdown potential of mercury vapour is measured between mild stee planar electrodes. The mercury vapour pressure is varied over a range of more than six orders of magnitude and the ambient temperature of both the gas and the electrodes assembly from 297 to 630°K. The experiments are made with two discharge tubes of different electrode design. The breakdown potential values plotted against the product of mercury vapour pressure times electrode gap length (p0d) exhibit the normal behaviour associated with Paschen breakdown curves.
