Abstract

Schizophrenia is probably the most distressing of all the mental illnesses. It is one of the most human disorders affecting the ability to form or sustain relationships, to engage with others, even to engage with one’s self. Freedman gives a bio-psychosocial history of the disorder—including biblical references, the psychoanalytical preoccupation of schizophrenia as a manifestation of sexual deviancy or homosexuality, and the development of clinical symptoms and treatments.
