Abstract

The prodomal phase of schizophrenia is characterised by changes in behaviour, mood, cognitive functioning and possibly neurobiological and neurocognitive changes. Symptom improvement following psychotic illness is not always matched by functional recovery, and remains disabling and problematic for the individual and his/her family. Social roles and goals and employment are often affected by psychosis. Strategic healthcare guidance recommends the provision of educational, vocational and social recovery following first episode psychosis. Offering activity as a platform to re-engage in mainstream activities, leisure pursuits and vocational activities provides opportunities to overcome stigma, re-build self-esteem and aid recovery from first episode psychosis. Activity should be offered as a core intervention in the rehabilitation of individuals following first episode psychosis.
