Abstract

Neonatal lupus erythematosus is characterized by the development of cutaneous injuries and congenital heart block. We describe a case of fetal atrioventricular block in a 23-year-old primigravida, detected in the ultrasound scan at 20 weeks. Maternal lupus was diagnosed on the basis of anti-Ro and anti-La antibodies in the mother's blood. Expectant management was carried out with close monitoring without prenatal treatment. The neonate was born in the referral hospital. A pacemaker was implanted with satisfactory outcome. The mother showed no puerperal outbreak.
