Abstract

Bismuth subsalicylate preparations are over-the-counter remedies for gastrointestinal complaints. Intestinal absorption in small amounts (<1%)1 does occur and may cause neurotoxicity2 and skin reactions.3 We describe a patient with black granules on the skin after ingestion of PeptoBismol brand of bismuth subsalicylate.
