Abstract

An optical birefringence study was carried out on the quantum ferroelectric phase transition in oxygen isotope exchanged system SrTi(16O1-x 18Ox)3. The ferroelectric ordering in (110)c and (001)c plates for x > 0.33 brought about a marked enhancement in the temperature dependence of birefringence. Tetragonal symmetry is considered to be broken into a lower symmetry, i.e. orthorhombic one, below Tc. The antiferrodistortive phase transition Ta was found to increase quadratically with an increase in temperature from 105 K for x = 0 to 108 K x = 1.0.
