Abstract

Fluoride is one of the most hazardous problems associated with drinking water. Many areas have been abandoned due to high fluoride content. The state of Rajasthan (India) in particular is facing many problems due to high levels of salts, especially fluoride in ground water. Concentration of fluoride higher than permissible limits may cause impairment of normal functioning in plants and animals. Two oscillatorial species viz Oscillatoria anguina (Bory) Gomond and O. laete-virens (Crouan) Gomond were studied for their fluoride absorption potential. Water samples collected from affected fluoride areas of Jaipur (Rajasthan) were separately treated with different concentrations of unialgal cultures of Oscillatoria. Measurements of pH, chloride, alkanity, BOD, and COD revealed the overall physio-chemistry of both species samples. Twenty-thirty percent (20%−30%) concentrations (w/v) of inoculated Oscillatoria were found to be optimum for fluoride reduction. Fluoride was absorbed up to a certain level of incubation period (132−144 h). Further increase in either the concentration of the inoculants or incubation period did not have any effect.
