Abstract

Introduction We present the results obtained with the radiocolloid technique, which has allowed the introduction of sentinel node biopsy in the Hospital Clínico San Carlos. Material and methods We performed a prospective study. A) Main objectives: to identify the validity of sentinel node biopsy in determining axillary nodal status in patients with breast cancer. B) Secondary objectives: to compare two techniques of radiocolloid injection: group A: intraparenchymatous peritumoral injection, and group B: subdermal periareolar injection. Seventyfive patients were studied. Sentinel node biopsy was performed in all patients in the sample followed by axillary lymphadenectomy to validate the results. Results A) Efficacy parameters. Sensitivity was 82%, with two false negative results (.18%). Negative predictive value was 96.7%. Staging accuracy was 97%. B) Detection of sentinel node migration rate (MR): a) in peritumoral injection the MR was 69.2%. b) in periareolar injection the MR was 96.8% (p=0.009). Conclusions A) Sentinel node biopsy with radiocolloid guidance is a reliable technique for obtaining information on axillary status for staging and therapeutic purposes. B) The best results were obtained with subdermal periareolar injection.
