Abstract

BiOI-based photocathode has attracted much attention for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting application. Here, we have designed a BiOI/AgI/Ag plasmonic heterostructure through a facile electrodeposition combined with ion-exchange and illumination approach. The work function difference between BiOI and AgI brings favorable interfacial band bending, and the Ag nanoparticle exhibits localized surface plasmonic effect to boost the carrier transfer. Thus, the BiOI/AgI/Ag photocathode achieves superior current density of −1.02 mA cm−2 at 0 V vs. RHE for 200 min, which is 50 times than that of pristine BiOI. These results pave a way for promising PEC water splitting using BiOI-based heterostructure photocathodes.
