Beyond methods: Theoretical underpinnings of triangulation in qualitative and multi-method studies: A literature review

Abstract

This scientific study explores the concept of the “triangulation approach” in the methodology of social scientific research. Triangulation represents an innovative method, particularly within the realms of qualitative and multimethod research. Scholars in the field of social sciences have recently shown a keen interest in employing the triangulation approach, especially for conducting profound inquiries using multiple queries. However, this method encounters criticism and misunderstandings among social researchers regarding its essence, application methodology, and the credibility of the obtained results. Consequently, this article meticulously analyses the essence of triangulation, elucidates the various forms of this approach, and explores its potential applications in the social sciences. The research methodology is grounded in a systematic literature review, encompassing 31 articles published in scientific journals. The article critically examines publications related to triangulation, unveils diverse methods of employing triangulation in social sciences, and underscores the advantages and limitations of its application. The theoretical contribution of the article lies in unveiling the essence of the triangulation approach and its interconnection with qualitative and multimethod research. Moreover, the empirical component of the study significantly enhances the methodological aspect of social sciences, fostering a thorough understanding and application of the triangulation approach among scholars in the field
