Abstract
: This study discusses the factors that led to the emergence of television as a mass medium in Brazil. The discussion focuses on how economic and political changes, facilitated by technological developments, have shaped Brazilian society, the Brazilian television industry and its programming over the years. In so doing it calls attention to the driving forces that underpinned the rapid expansion of the Brazilian television market and Globo's rise as a leading international producer and exporter of television programming.
