Abstract

An enclosure of 133 ha of mixed forest was built in December 1969. The roe deer are fed ad libitum with artficial fodder all year round to observe the increasing population under good feeding conditions. The total roe deer population within the fence is life-trapped and marked individually with plastic collars and ear-marks each winter. In January/February 1970 41 roe deer were captured (29 within the fence). At that time 22 reproductive females, 5 females fawns, 5 male fawns, and 9 males one year and older were present. In February 1971-for lack of personnel-no total census by trapping was possible. Only 3 young and 7 adult pregnant does and 5 bucks were captured and removed. In December 1971 we trapped almost the total population, the rest was shot; the population consisted then of 17 adult does, 10 adult bucks, 15 females and 15 males 1,5 years old, and 16 females and 20 males 0,5 years old. It was reduced then to 6 adult does, 7 young does, 5 female and 5 male fawns, 8 young and 6 adult surviving fawns related to reproductive does in May) was 136% to 1,5 years age offawns (1971), 212% to 0,5 years age of fawns (1971), and 185% to 0,5 years age of fawns (1972). In January/February 1972 4 primipara had 7 corpora lutea and 5 embryos, 5 adult does had 12 corp. lut. and 10 embryos, two of which were dead. 1 out of 3 fawns shot had 1 corp. lut. and 1 male embryo of 81 mm length (Febr.).-Population density is supposed to have less influence on reproduction rate in roe deer than feeding conditions.
