Abstract

A peculiar aspect of the church government under John XXII is the large number of theological commissions convened by the pope on theological matters, either in order to prepare doctrinal definitions or to condemn controversial authors. More than a hundred prelates have been involved in those debates. The analysis of their careers shows that many among them obtained important rewards for their advice. It is confirmed that around the fifth year of his pontificate, the attention of the pope turned from jurists to theologians, who were better equipped to deal with the ecclesiological debates at stake.
