Abstract
This chapter introduces the book’s theme for elaborating and disseminating information on the automation of instructional system development. The focus is to promote the use of artificial intelligence and advanced interactive technologies in the design, development, and delivery of instructional computing systems. The specific goals are to: (a) share the lessons learned from the NATO Advanced Research Workshop in the area of automated instructional design; (b) facilitate international cooperation in the implementation of advanced instructional development systems; and (c) stimulate further R&D by presenting state-of-the-art knowledge with regard to automated instructional design.
