Abstract

Quantitative results on laser generated acoustic waves in carbon/ epoxy composites was presented. With this point-source technique, it is shown that the wavefront arrival times agree with the energy velocities rather than with the phase velocities. A pronounced anisotropy has been observed in the amplitudes of the wave fronts. The comparison between experimental directivity patterns of quasi-longitudinal, quasi-shear, transverse bulk waves and simulations demonstrates that this phenomenon can be ascribed to the self-focusing effect. It was shown that in anisotropic media, the energy flow is much more concentrated in some directions than others.
