Pulmonary function testing (PFT) has become an integral part of the clinical assessment of pulmonary diseases and has been practiced more and more in pediatrics. The results of tests cannot be interpreted appropriately without reference values. It is recommended that laboratories should use the predicted equations that are most close to their population. However, there are no such references available for southern Chinese children until now. Objective This study was undertaken to characterize the forced expiratory maneuver of growth and establish the normal lung function prediction equations for southern Chinese children. Methods A survey in 385 healthy school children (200 boys, 185 girls) aged 6 to 14 years old was carried out in Guangzhou in 1998. Thirteen flow-volume tests parameters [e.g. forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume at one second (FEV1), maximal mid-expiratory flow rate (FEF25%-75%)] were measured by using Gould 2800 spirometry. Stepwise multiple regressions and non-linear regressions were carried out with the statistical software SPSS 9.0 for Windows to identify the best predictors of lung function parameters using standing height, weight, age and gender as potential determinants. Standing height, weight and age were used to compare the predicted values from our equations and other commonly used equations such as Ploger′s, Knudson′s and Hong′s. Results All lung volumes and flow rates increased with the age, height as well as weight growth in both gender groups. FVC were significantly different among age groups in both genders (Fboy=4.562, Fgirl=5.137, P all <0.001). It was found that lung volumes were higher in boys than those in girls under the age of 10 years, and cross-over occurred at the age of 11 to 12 years, then inversed again after 13 years of age. The correlation among most lung function parameters was higher in height than weight and age. The regression equation for FEV1 and height is as follows: (Boys)FEV1=0.141453×height0.019138, r=0.93178, P<0.001, (Girls)FEV1=0.127 097×height0.019 676, r=0.90382, P<0.001. The average expiratory time was 3.11 seconds in this group. The regression equations of lung function were established. By comparison with the equations derived from our study and studies by other authors, it was found that the difference between measured data and predicted values from other authors were higher than those from ours. Conclusion Reference values and predicted equations for forced expiratory lung function for southern Chinese children presented in this paper may be recommended for use in the southern regions of China. 《壇經》的作者與版本-印順與胡適及日本學者相關研究觀點之比較

The problems of the author and version of Altar Scriptures are the cruxes to the history of the Chinese Zen in the early days. Taking the ”Author and Version of Altar Scriptures-A Comparative Study of Related Research Viewpoints among Yin Shun, Hu Shih and Japanese Scholars” as the theme, this paper aims at studying and comparing the research results of Yin Shun and so on over these aspects. Hu Shih thinks that the author of Altar Scriptures should be Shen Huei and Dunhuang version is the most ancient version of Altar Scriptures. Suzuki Daisetsu argues that Altar Scriptures is a work passed on to the later generations from the Southern Master, and thus its version goes through changes along with time. Ui Hakuju indicates that Altar Scriptures may be gradually revised and enlarged, and has gone through at least two revisions. Employing a different path, Sekiguchi Mahiro refers to the suspected ideas of Huei Neng in Interpretation of Jin-gang Scriptures according to the legend, and believes that Altar Scriptures represents the thinking of Shen Huei. He gives evidence and reasons that Altar Scriptures cannot represent the ideas of Huei Neng. He mentions that the two volumes of Interpretation of Jin-gang Scriptures, or the suspected ideas of Huei Neng, are consistent with Pithy Formulas of Jin-gang Scriptures. He suggests that Jin-gang Ban-ruo-mi Scriptures is the blueprint of Huei Neng's thinking. However, Yanagida Seizan has a different point of view. He thinks that Altar Scriptures is a mixed product of Niu-tou Master and Southern Master, and that Lelin Fahai of Niu-tou Master is very probably the author of this book. Yin Shun thinks that the main body of Altar Scriptures is just ”Teaching of Da-fan Temple.” He trusts that the Dunhuang version of Altar Scriptures has gone through at least two revisions: one refers to the revision of Altar Scriptures as mentioned by Huei Jhong of Nanyang, and the so-called ”Southern Objectives,” and the other refers to the Altar Scriptures passed on by the disciples of Shen Huei. Above all, over the issues of the author and version of Altar Scriptures, Yin Shun, Hu Shih and each of those Japanese scholars have their own evidences and points of view.

Japan and China have a very close relationship. Besides borrowing Chinese characters, it also owes a deep and far influence to China. Some earliest Japanese literature works, such as The Ancient Chronicles(KOZIKI) in year 712, Japanese Chronicles (NIHONSHOKI) in 720, and the poetry anthology KAIHUSO in 751 were all written in Chinese characters. Up until the middle of Edo, the so-called ”renovating literature” was born. The Stories of Rain and the Moon (UGETSUMONOGATARI), was one of the representing work among all the fantastic and ghost fictions. Especially for the second volume, the Appointment of Chrysanthemum, was apparently adapted from the novel, Fan Ju-Ching's Life-and Death Friendship, produced in Ming's Dynasty.Although the wording and the plots were very similar to the Chinese version, the meaning and its functions that Japanese one presented were rather different and unique. This study tried explore the development of Fan Ju-ching's story in China and how it was rearranged and renovated into a fit-for-Japanese story by the Japanese author with his own literature accomplishment under the Japanese social and folk customary influence.

The author writes this essay at the invitation of Taiwan Narrative Studies Association for an academic seminar, and it is also an issue that the author attempts to understand in addition to his researches and studies on ”The Initial Relation between China and Germany”. Especially in the special topics of ”Chinese and the Western culture exchanges”, most of the scholars emphasize on the study of ”How the Western understand China?” or ”What was the impression of China to the Western people?”. On the contrary, the author pays more attention to the issues such as: ”How the ancient Chinese understood the Western? Especially how they understood ”Germany” or ”German”? What was the Impression of ”German” or ”Germany” to ancient Chinese people? Regarding to these issues, the author further published an essay: ”The Missionary Work of Catholicism in China During Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties and the Initial Relation between China and Germany”, and conducted a seminar ”Review and Outlook of the Researches and Studies on the History of Communications between China and Europe since the Past 70 Years” held by the Department of History, Fu Jen Catholic University in August 2000. Furthermore, the author has made an application to the National Science Council, Executive Yuan in 2002 for the subsidy of his studies on the special plan ”Views of ancient Chinese to Germany”. For this reason, the author further attempts to discuss the issues on whether the ancient Chinese books and sketches recorded in the Yuan and Ming Dynasties had any narration to the distant ”Germany” or ”German” from what was learned by the author from the abovementioned essay and the special study plan? If yes, how were they recorded or narrated? Moreover, the author attempts now to undertake further researches and study on the topics, such as: ”Whether such records and narrations had promoted the ancient Chinese literati officialdom to ”know” or ”understand” the ”Germany” or ”German?” and ”Whether such narration had affected and changed the narrow global view of the ancient Chinese who believed that the Imperial China was the ruler of the whole world?”

This paper aims to explore the first-ever historical critiques Shih-t'ung (Generality of Historiography, Liu Zhiji, 661-721, AD) in Chinese history, on how it elaborates, with 49 volumes in total, both internal and external, on the earliest chronicle historiography Shih-chi (The Records of the Grand Historian, Sima Qian, c.145~c.87 BC). Embarking on three respective aspects: historiography (outer level), the ”Three Qualifications for Historian” (core level), and historical thoughts (higher level), the study tries to investigate how Shih-t'ung had lashed on Shih-chi by calling into questions the structural style, structural and explanatory examples, and the science of history materials. In addition, an in-dept examination will be made on Sima Qian's academic talent, learning and knowledge. Finally, from the perspectives of Chinese historical philosophy of ”nature and human” and the historical thought of ”continuity and change”, the study further reveals that although the different approaches adopted by both authors originated from the distinct nature of the works itself, while in fact, the guiding thought behinds such discrepancy is coherent. It is through such analysis which has a great representative significance, that we may thus gain a clear grasp of the arguments proposed by Shih-t'ung and understand one of the aspects exhibited by ”the Studies of Shih-chi” prevailed in the Tang Dynasty.
