Abstract

Abstract An automated system for monitoring bischloromethylether (BCME) in atmospheres to below the threshold limit set by the Health and Safety Executive is described. The BCME is trapped on an adsorbent contained in a small tube‐type personal monitor. Routine analysis of the monitors is fully automated. Thermal desorption is used to remove the vapours from the adsorbent; they are separated using gas chromatography, and the BCME is identified and measured by mass spectrometry using an Ion Trap Detector (ITD)TM.
