Abstract
The article presents an analytical review of the memoirs of former U.S. intelligence agent Edward Snowden [Edward Snowden, 2020], whose revelations raised the question of total U.S. surveillance of citizens and the erosion of the foundations of Western liberal democracy. The conclusion is made about the alarming trends of digitalization, leading to the withdrawal of modern technologies from the control of civil society. Using the example of Edward Snowden's professional activity and career path in the CIA and the NSA, the conclusion is made about the "privatization" trends in the activities of U.S. intelligence, expressed in the broad involvement of numerous subcontractor companies and employees working under contracts with commercial non-state structures. The lack of control on the part of civil society and the mass media over the activities of the state in the information sphere is stated, due not only to the aggressive manipulation of public consciousness by the state and telecommunication corporations dependent on it, but also the lack of critical thinking skills and professional analysis of information flows among the mass consumer of information technologies.
