Abstract

Your ASLO Board met on 25–26 February, 2017, prior to the Aquatic Sciences Meeting in Honolulu, HI, to conduct business for the society. At every Board meeting, the status of our membership, finances, and ASLO publications are discussed. In addition, the Board examines reports from all of the ASLO committees and discusses the most effective way to implement activities to meet our mission and the many goals of our Strategic Plan. The Board welcomed President-elect Michael Pace; however, new member-at-large Hans-Peter Grossart was unable to attend due to recent visa issues. President Linda Duguay highlighted activities since the June meeting in Santa Fe. Representatives from Wiley Press reported to the Board and noted an approximate twofold increase in institutional subscriptions this year for our family of Limnology & Oceanography journals. Our flagship journal L&O published a special issue devoted to understanding methane in aquatic ecosystems and celebrated its 60th anniversary with a “virtual issue” highlighting the 10 most cited papers for each of the past six decades. For Limnology & Oceanography Methods, submissions have increased by 20% over the historical average and time to first decision continues to decrease. The ASLO website re-design is in progress, but should be live in May, so watch for the announcement. The 2017 ASLO Business meeting for members was held on Monday evening during the Honolulu Aquatic Sciences meeting. The Business meeting, which followed the reception for the new class of ASLO Fellows and Sustaining Fellows, was well attended by members. After reports from officers and editors, a number of comments, including suggestions for the Board to consider regarding student memberships, were made by members. One member noted that many universities have scholarship funds available for page charges, so members should investigate and take advantage of this option if available through their university. The ASLO election is in progress and will close 1st April, so please vote for Treasurer, Members-at-Large and Student Board member. Lisa Campbell, ASLO Secretary; secretary@aslo.org
